Amber Lynn Vineyard
Amber Vineyard aka Ambience, fell in love with Waacking fall 2008 at Funkin' Stylez,
Germany (first European Underground Dance event ft. Waacking as a category) Here she meet Legendary Archie Burnett whom introduced Waacking through his free style, energy and presence.
With Amber's background in acting, theater, TV, psychology (non-verbal behavior) AND dance she was immediately drawn to the attitude and personality-play that this style asks for. Being hungry for more, she traveled Europe following TyroneProctor, Archie Burnett and their workshops, while seeking knowledge and understanding of Waacking, its origin as well as foundations. Fall 2009, Amber founded the female dance crew Femme Lethàl, which has been the recognized for introducing for Waacking and Vogue in the Netherlands where the group has show cased in both the underground and commercial
scenes.
Teaching:
Amber has began teaching and giving workshops in the style. Duringthe past 3 years Amber has learned that OGs all have their own storys and experiences about where and how waacking came to be and how it should look. But one thing that everyone can agree on is waacking is an open dance that is in touch with emotions. Keeping this in mind Amber has structured her waacking classes around this idea. Personality play with-in waacking. These exercises have found to help students understand waacking and its movements as well as help find their alter-ego in their own dance style and performance.
Because Waacking is not just a dance style, it is a state of mind (And it's a fabulous one). ;)
History:
Waacking is a street style that was born in the underground nightclub scenes within the gay
community of the early 70s on the west coast of California, Los Angeles. In this community
men would dress the part and reenact famous female singers and actresses to their favorite
disco tracks. Waacking become a dance that played with personalities, emotions and
mimics of fabulous women, their femininity and their poses. As the dance grew so did
the momevents. Dancers whom appeared on the 'Soul Train' such as Tyrone Proctor and
Shabbadoo gave Waacking more vocabulary and control with in the movements and showed
it to the straight community as well as the world. Many dancers assumed that waacking
was a gay expression of Locking but this is only because there are some similarities in the
arm movements, but these are two very different styles and cultures. Waacking is also
commonly associated with Vogue because they both are extroverted street styles that play
with the 'alter-ego'. The biggest difference is Waacking is a funk style full of movement
and embodiment of emotions and personalities where as Vogue is part of the House Dance
culture that is static dance full of continuous posing inspired by fashion models, their
photographs and couture.
